Tires And Aging

Tires And Aging

Tires are one of the top concerns of drivers. I’m often asked how you can tell a tire needs to be replaced and does it have to do with how old they are. Good question. Tires go through a lot. Heat is very hard on tires and aside from a hot, summer day, pavement is 10 to 15 degrees hotter than that. Our car’s tires sit on that heat all day long. Sunlight and coastal climates are also hard on tires. It takes time but there is a chemical reaction in the rubber components of tires and heat and sunlight speed up this deterioration. Phoenix is certainly considered a hot climate in the summer months so paying attention to our tires’ pressures is very important. A car that just sits over a long period of time without being driven also accelerates the aging process. Spare tires have this problem as well. They look okay as they still have good tread…but the integrity of the rubber has been compromised. Looks can be deceiving when it comes to rubber components ... read more

Help Your Teenage Driver Be Prepared In Case of an Accident

Help Your Teenage Driver Be Prepared In Case of an Accident

As the owner of Fairway Auto Repair I think a lot about teenage drivers and their safety. I have two teens of my own and Phoenix’s Grand Canyon University is very close to the shop. I recently heard about a couple that were taking a well-earned vacation when they received a call from their son who was in college. “Dad, how does this car insurance thing work again?” Not a comforting call. He didn’t want to disturb his dad while he was on vacation but since he was involved in an accident he needed a little guidance. Most of us seem to put the thought of accidents out of our mind so when it happens we are left not only in shock but a bit disoriented and not sure how to proceed. Being prepared is always best however; I am apt to put these thoughts on the back burner myself. Don’t Let An Accident Get You All Shook Up The first reaction many teens have when they are involved in an accident is panic. • “I can’t believe this has happ ... read more

Pets and Summer Vacation

Pets and Summer Vacation

We see lots of dogs with their heads sticking out windows of cars enjoying the breeze. It makes me smile but at the same time I’m always concerned for the dogs’ health. It seems no matter how many warnings people are given about the dangers of leaving dogs and children in a hot car in summer, each year in Phoenix we hear the sad news that it happens…way too often! If you do plan to travel with your pets this summer, make plans before you leave home so you and your pet aren’t overly stressed by the trip. •Select a hotel or cabin that welcomes pets. • Plan a vacation that your pet will enjoy as well! • Find restaurants that offer outdoor dining that accommodate your animals. • Make sure your pets have all their shots up to date, are in good health for travel and have had their flea and tick prevention. • Don’t assume that a “pet friendly” hotel will be accommodating to cats and other animals. I’ve heard many times that hotels or r ... read more
