Halloween is a favorite of retailers because consumers spend a great deal on parties and decorating. It is supposed to be a fun time but sadly, it has its share of problems such as pedestrian deaths, car thefts and car vandalism. Car Thefts Halloween ranks third as the deadliest day for pedestrians. December 23 and January 1 are the two days ahead of Halloween. It does, however, come in first for car thieves. The National Crime Information Center. In 2011 (the last time the data was compiled) 2,328 vehicles were stolen. It seems car thieves take advantage of cars being parked in unfamiliar places and people seem more distracted. It is also easy for a thieves to disguise themselves on that day as so many are in costume. Vandalism Cars are also twice as likely to be vandalized on Halloween. There are so many car myths that consumers actually believe so I thought it was time to do a little debunking! Here is what you need to know when it comes to fuel economy! Better Fuel Economy – Manual transmissions give you better mileage. This is no longer true. Today’s technology has changed this old truth but many consumers still believe it! Your car uses less gas with the air conditioner on versus opening the windows. This is not true. Driving with the windows down gives you better gas mileage. Pumping gas in the morning gives you more fuel for your money! Not true! Fuel is stored underground in tanks so the idea that you get more for less as cooler gasoline is denser does not hold true. October is National Car Care Month! Many consumers have tightened their proverbial belts these past few years and it is certainly understandable. These are uncertain times we live in…including economically. Still…safety is a vital concern and there are many cars on the road today that are not in good shape. Recalls In the United States last year we broke a record with the number of vehicle recalls. This was certainly newsworthy…yet millions of drivers failed to get their vehicles repaired. It didn’t cost them anything…except time and apparently they were short of that commodity. What does this mean to consumers?
