The Magic Box

The Magic Box

Many times I get calls from consumers wanting “just an estimate” and they get concerned because we always say “bring it in and let us take a look so we know best how to advise you of needed service.” Some ask such things as why their car’s check engine light was on, especially as the car was running just fine. They said a neighbor came over and offered advice and a diagnosis of what he thought the problem might be. I appreciate the helpfulness of friends, neighbors and tow truck drivers as they care enough to try to figure out what a car problem might be. Many times they have been right but just as many times they have been wrong. Whatever their diagnosis might be…it is still just a guess! Professionals (whether it is an auto repair shop, home air conditioning repair, the dentist or doctor), would never give a diagnosis or attempt “a repair” without first testing circuits, components or in humans taking temperatures, blood pressure, dra ... read more

Pets and Summer Vacation

Pets and Summer Vacation

We see lots of dogs with their heads sticking out windows of cars enjoying the breeze. It makes me smile but at the same time I’m always concerned for the dogs’ health. It seems no matter how many warnings people are given about the dangers of leaving dogs and children in a hot car in summer, each year in Phoenix we hear the sad news that it happens…way too often! If you do plan to travel with your pets this summer, make plans before you leave home so you and your pet aren’t overly stressed by the trip. Select a hotel or cabin that welcomes pets. Plan a vacation that your pet will enjoy as well! Find restaurants that offer outdoor dining that accommodate your animals. Make sure your pets have all their shots up to date, are in good health for travel and have had their flea and tick prevention. Don’t assume that a “pet friendly” hotel will be accommodating to cats and other animals. I’ve heard many times that hotels or resorts cl ... read more

Software Glitches…Cars Aren’t Immune!

Software Glitches…Cars Aren’t Immune!

We love our technology…when it works properly. Nothing is more frustrating than software when it has glitches. Last year, software related problems in vehicles broke records. Here is what the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tells us: In 2015, 615 complaints were reported by drivers to NHTSA In 2016, 202 complaints have already been reported to NHTSA In 2014, 505 complaints were reported to NHTSA Since 2011, there have been a total of 2011 complaints filed with NHTSA This is problematic because drivers will not want to purchase vehicles they can’t trust and the more complaints logged, the more the lack of trust builds. This may seem like just a few complaints when we think about how many vehicles are in traffic day in and day out…but on top of the complaints there have been recalls as well. There have been approximately 200 software-related recalls since 2015. These recalls have affected over 13 million vehicles! These software issues have m ... read more
